Outrageous times for talk radio "...talk radio has followed the leader. That leader, George Bush, has openly rejected nuance, embraced simplicity, applied spin when facts weren't enough. He has stayed ''on message,'' unembarrassed to tell us, ''I don't see many shades of gray in this world.'' So too talk radio, a medium that is equally black and white, us and them, good and evil. Talk radio has become the Bush National Radio Network, a support system for the prowar movement." Everyone will see all this soon enough, but I think it's important to see the images of the pre-emptive war in Iraq. I've seen articles about how many US and British casualties there have been, but I have yet to see any estimate of Iraqi casualties. "Around 9 p.m. local time (1 p.m. EST), Baghdad's skies erupted in brilliant light and raining fire from explosions. The thunder from the explosions reverberated throughout the city. Iraqi anti-aircraft fire could be seen flashing over the city as blast after blast ripped through the city center. Several buildings could be seen burning."

Rural LSD lab bust surprises neighbors "Folks living around the former missile silo figured something wasn't quite right. Maybe it was the vehicles coming and going from the complex when most people were thinking of bedtime. Maybe it was the unfriendly attitude of those hanging around the old complex. Things started to make sense in November 2000, when authorities raided the site - and said they found enough chemicals to make millions of doses of LSD." 13myths.org A site with 13 myths about the upcoming war, along with the truth underlying them. Quite interesting reading, especially if you are planning on playing the dissenter role in the next few weeks, as I am. This site will help with your anti-war apologetics. The new US defense posture - Pre-emption "To them, it will show that this whole U.N. detour was an exercise in futility that this is what the president planned to do all along," Stanley Hoffmann, the Harvard professor who has spent a lifetime studying war and the trans-Atlantic alliance, said today. "There is no room in the U.N. charter for the president's doctrine of pre-emption, for anticipatory self-defense."

New Mexico passes a sensible, good law. Will wonders never cease? Amongst other things, it orders the police in New Mexico to: "refrain from engaging in the surveillance of individuals or groups of individuals based on their participation in activities protected by the First Amendment to the United States constitution, such as political advocacy or the practice of a religion, without reasonable and particularized suspicion of criminal conduct unrelated to the activity protected by the First Amendment to the United States constitution; refrain from undertaking or participating in any initiative, such as the terrorist information and prevention system, also known as TIPS, that encourages members of the general public to spy on their neighbors, colleagues or customers; direct public libraries to post in a prominent place within the library a notice as follows: "WARNING: Under Section 215 of the federal USA Patriot Act (Public Law 107-56), records of books and other materials you borrow from this library may be obtained by federal agents. This law also prohibits librarians from informing you if records about you have been obtained by federal agents. Questions about this policy should be directed to Attorney General John Ashcroft, Department of Justice, Washington, DC 20530."; refrain, whether acting alone or with federal law enforcement officers, from collecting or maintaining information about the political, religious or social views, associations or activities of any individual, group, association, organization, corporation, business or partnership unless such information directly relates to an investigation of criminal activity and there are reasonable grounds to believe that the subject of the information is or may be involved in criminal conduct;" But, really, you should read the whole bill. |
