NATIVE NASHVILLE - NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY & CULTURE - CHEROKEE STORIES - The Rabbit Goes Duck Hunting If you're like me, you've been up the last couple of nights trying to figure out what "duck caught in a noose" means. Well, this is a link to an old Cherokee myth that is apparently the source of the reference. "While the Otter had been under the water Rabbit had peeled some bark from a sapling and made himself a noose. "Now," he said, "Just watch me;" and he dived in and swam a little way under the water until he was nearly choking and had to come up to the top to breathe. He went under again and came up again a little nearer to the ducks. He took another breath and dived under, and this time he came up among the ducks and threw the noose over the head of one and caught it. The duck struggled hard and finally spread its wings and flew up from the water with the Rabbit hanging on to the noose."

NWK Eplorer Released "Based on the very same programs that Stephen Wolfram used to create the graphics in his book, A New Kind of Science Explorer allows you to experience the discoveries of the book on your own computer, repeating Wolfram's experiments and trying ones of your own." I must say, this may even be a little to nerdy for me. I still do not quite understand the usefulness of the program as I haven't read the book, but buzz words caught me like Evolution of a Turing Machine and Evolution and dimensional cellular automaton . I couldn't help myself...I was fascinated by all of the things that I couldn't understand with all of the neat buzzwords. I'm silly that way. The only knowledge I could catalog from my memory on Wolfram was a small section of a Mondo 2000 guide book which had an interview excerpt with him concerning his Mathematica software. I remembered being fascinated by the idea that he presented, namely, that he was interested at the time (this is probably 1989-90)in creating a program for quantum cellular automata. That in mind, I checked out an excerpt of this book that the NWK Explorer is based upon. Either this guy is the most pompous man on the planet, or he actually has something to say. Either way, it caught my attention and I will now be forced to look into this book more fully...even if he does appear to condescend his readers.

Profiling George W. Bush and Saddam Hussein: An Analysis Based on Non-Verbal and Expressive Behavior An interesting experiment by the master of double-speak, Dr. Christopher Hyatt. An excerpt to peek your curiosity:" What Saddam doesn't realize is that George has become used to being made fun of. In fact, all of the ugly press about George's lack of good grammar and syntax as well as his clumsy personal appearance has made George a lot stronger than most people think. In other words, George's anxiety and fear of shame and perceived weakness have made him a formidable opponent." (Thanks, Christy!)

Columns: Government should restrain damaging urge to 'educate' voters "Most prominent leaders of Florida's educational bureaucracy agree about Amendment 9, which was placed on the ballot by a citizen petition. The state Board of Education opposes it. The state's university presidents have spoken out against it as a formal group. The Legislature tried to fight it by printing an inflated "price tag" on the ballot. And yet to all of these distinguished, smart, well-meaning people, I still insist: This is an abuse of government power. It is not the job of the government to "educate" the voters. It is none of the government's business which side will win an election. None. Of. The. Government's. Business." ellenfeiss.net > the real reason to switch "...the girl, the commercial, the website. what was mentioned to me as a joke has now become a reality. how could someone with 15 minutes of fame generate such a fan following. maybe it was the rumor that she was under the influence during the shooting of the commercial, or maybe pc users really are switching over to macs." And it was like, beep beep beep beep....

Tech-Critic - NEW: Longhorn Screen Shots! Here are some screen shots from what is alleged to be the next rev of Windows, codenamed "Longhorn". Expected in 2005, it's based on XP, and looks to be similar, although there are some user interface changes that I can see from the screen grabs. Take it for what it's worth. You should look at this link soon, as MS is already sending out cease and desist letters to people that have posted these - they may not be up for long..... AlterNet: Michael Moore Asks Big Questions "Michael Moore is the documentary filmmaker that movie critics hate to love. The Los Angeles Times calls his new movie, "scattershot," "haphazard" and "all over the map." The New York Times accuses him of "slippery logic, tendentious grandstanding and outright demagoguery." And yet, with almost no exceptions, the critics heartily recommend "Bowling for Columbine." |
