Narco News: Eminem's Antidote to September 11th A surprisingly astute article about Eminem, of whom I'm not personally very fond. (I feel his work is unimaginative, and too much centered around his own silly problems, but hey, what can you do?) a quote: "Marshall Mathers knows that out-of-the-closet misogyny - as if fear and hatred of women doesn't exist in newsrooms and boardrooms and other places where language is oh so enforced and clean - is one of the only things that can possibly offend the comfortable editorial class anymore, it works like a charm every time, and so why would he shut up about it now? Mathers and his alter-ego Slim Shady are better journalists than most of us who hide behind that title in order to gossip about other people. Eminem brings us the reality as he and so many of his public have lived it, and doesn't sugarcoat the daily truths of the American underclass. I mean, would anybody out there seriously argue that the world he describes of young men bitching about bitches doesn't exist? Of course not: The problem is that we're not supposed to admit it except when using very clinical pop-psychology language that strips the fist and the dick and the clit and the rage and the godawful truths from the photo."

Debt collectors in Hong Kong will do anything to get money Annoyed by debt collectors calling your house all the time? Well, you should thank your lucky stars you're not in China. This article starts with a story about a debt collector calling over 600 times in a single day, and ends with this most extreme of debt collection stories: "In one particularly gruesome case, three men tortured and dismembered a 23-year-old nightclub hostess and stuffed her head inside a Hello Kitty doll. She allegedly owed $2,560. The men got life in prison." AJR - The Information Squeeze This is a good article from the American Journalism Review that talks about the ways in which government agencies are trying to seal themselves off from having to reveal information under the Freedom of Information Act. Many examples are included of ways in which legitimate journalism has been supressed. Particularly interesting are some of the examples from Florida, well know for it's Sunshine Laws.

CIA ordered to disclose MKULTRA documents "A federal district court in Washington, D.C., August 8 granted reporter John F. Kelly limited but highly unusual access to some Central Intelligence Agency operational files in his request for records concerning the federal government's mind control experiments of the 1950s. Judge Thomas Hogan ruled that the CIA must search and review its operational files for information concerning the MKULTRA project, and make all releasable information from those files available to Kelly."

Jesus Had Short Hair! "The radical Jerry Rubin says in his book, DO IT, "Young kids identify short hair with authority, discipline, unhappiness, boredom, rigidity, hatred of right, and long hair with letting go... Wherever we go, our hair tells people where we stand on Vietnam, Wallace, campus disruption, dope. We are living TV commercials for the revolution... Long hair is the beginning of our liberation from sexual oppression that underlies the whole military society." via memepool Learn Logic from Beavis and Butthead "Equivocation Equivocation means many things, but is often taken to mean using a word in a different sense to that which was intended. In fact the word "equivocation" is pretty equivocal. (Beavis, under the influence of a music video, is "dancing" on the sofa.) Butthead: Get down, Beavis! Beavis : I am getting down!" |
